Title: HV/MV Engineer
Business Unit: Wind Power
Education: MSc in Electrical Engineering from DTU
What I do
I have been working in Ørsted since 2015, first as a Student Assistant and now as a full-time Engineer in the Transformers & High Voltage Components department. In the offshore team, we have the technical responsibility for all the main electrical components such as, the transformers, reactors, and the gas insulated switchgear on the offshore substation. I specifically work with the Electrical Transmission System, which is a module group within the Wind Power business unit, where the overall objective is to reduce the total cost of our future wind farms, for instance by reducing the installation time. I hold part of the responsibility for specifying our technical requirements for the main components on the offshore substation for our suppliers. To secure a smooth installation process of offshore substations, I furthermore help to coordinate all relevant interfaces.
What drives me
My main motivation is to make a difference by optimising our design together with all my very passionate colleagues. I aspire to contribute to reducing the cost of electricity, and this is without doubt, the one ambition that energizes me the most. My inspiration especially kicks in, when I have a dialogue with a colleague who has different responsibilities or has a different subject area than myself, and I feel their desire to reach our common objective by taking full advantage of our diverse areas of specialisation.
My advice
My best advice to new graduates is, follow your passion, as in the long run it will keep you motivated and help you perform at your best. A great way to get a job, as a new graduate, is to write your Master’s thesis in collaboration with Ørsted. That way, you will get to know the company and Ørsted will get to know you.
Fun fact
Having a background as Electrician, I always help friends with home projects, but I have never installed a lamp in my own house.

Jessica
Title: Senior Project Lead – Offshore Foundations
Date of joining Ørsted: 2013
What I do
I am currently responsible for managing the load out, transport, and installation of the wind turbine foundations, including scour protection for the Borssele 01&02 Offshore Windfarm. More specifically, my role involves the management of the transport and installation contractor including overseeing their supply chain management as well as working with a team to develop the contractor’s standards of Quality, Health and Safety, and Environment on the project.
More recently I have assumed additional responsibilities beyond my core role as part of a specialist, cross disciplined team formed to investigate significant project related incidents.
My typical day
My role and involvement on a project will typically span the entirety of the Foundation (EPCI) project life cycle. Depending on the phase of a project, examples of my day to day activities can vary from leading the technical elements of contractual negotiations to handling technical interfaces enabling installation methods to be detailed, or from facilitation of technical workshops between contractors, to managing the contractor during the offshore installation works.
My career path
At University I undertook my undergraduate BSc in Geology & Oceanography and my post graduate MSc in Coastal Engineering in the Marine Environment, which led me straight into the offshore construction world. I started in the renewables industry in 2008 with a Dutch contractor working on several continents, latterly working as a Project Engineer on a variety of EPCI windfarm projects in the North Sea. I later joined Ørsted and worked as Foundation Installation Manager on the Racebank Project for almost 4 years before joining the Borssele Project in 2017. Having worked on both the supply side, and now the client side, I have gained a tremendous insight into how a managed but collaborative relationship can leverage the range of talent required to meet the high standards that our projects demand.
The best thing about my job
The people are undeniably the best part about my job. Whether it’s our sister departments that we co-depend upon or our contractors, working across the various phases of a project I encounter people from a huge variety of backgrounds with a wide range of roles and experiences; I feel like I learn almost every day and have the opportunity to influence great outcomes for our team and the project as a whole – all of this has enriched my professional life and made my work more efficient and impactful.

Title: Senior Project Manager
Business Unit: Wind Power
What I do
I am the Lead Project Manager responsible for the electrical package on Race Bank. That includes delivery of all the grid connections, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), HV electrical equipment, HV cable onshore and offshore supply and installation and array cable supply and installation - so a lot.
What drives me
I love working on big complex projects, and it doesn't get much more complex than what we do. We get a lot of opportunities to work on innovative solutions, and we have some of the most clever and experienced people in our industry – it doesn't get a lot better than that in my view.
My career path
I completed by Bachelors of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, and I also have a Masters of Science in Project Management. I´ve worked in large construction, on onshore wind farms, and then gained experience in offshore wind farms before moving to Ørsted.
My advice
Don't shy away from a challenge and be ready to be a valuable contributor to the team. If you share those ambitions, you’ll get rewarded by working for a great company and great people.

Title: Construction Project Manager
Business Unit: Wind Power
What do you do in your job?
I am the Construction Manager for the Hornsea Project One onshore substation, I am responsible for managing the delivery of the onshore substation throughout the construction phase from a green field to a full commissioned and operational substation.
What do you love about your job?
The best thing about my job is that it is dynamic, even though we have a detailed plans for the project each day brings new challenges. It is very rewarding in that the end result is something real that you can see, touch and be proud of.
What inspired you to work in the renewables industry/your role?
I first came into renewables whilst working for the Principal Contractor on the Westermost Rough onshore substation, which introduced me to the offshore wind industry and Ørsted. I enjoyed the project and working with Ørsted so much that following successful delivery I upped sticks and joined Ørsted on the Burbo Bank project.
Do you have any insights for someone wanting to get into a similar career?
Unfortunately there is no quick way to become a Construction Manager as it relies on experience and knowledge built up over time. A degree in a construction related topic is a good starting point and from there look to join a company that is recognised for investing in their employees, that will give you the right training and experience to advance your career. It's hard work but worth it!

What I do?
I’m doing Accounting and Finance processes for Malaysia office. My primary task is to prepare and examine financial records. I also make sure that records are accurate and all payments are paid accordingly and on time. In addition, I overview of the business operations and introduce or implement new things to help business operation runs smooth and efficiently.
Despite being in Accounting and Finance field, I was also introduced to other non-related tasks such as payroll. Doing payroll is not as tough as I thought it would be however I’m glad that I took up the challenge as I think doing payroll makes me know Ørsted Malaysia people better. I also picked up new skills and knowledge by doing so.
What excites me about my work?
To me a fun work environment is the best. To be working for 8 hours a day can be really stressful. However, thanks to management, by introducing PS4 or XBOX in the office, we can enjoy working in less stressful or ‘formal’ environment and socialize among Ørsted Malaysia people.
Ørsted Malaysia also promotes and encourage learning to support our career development. So, the answer to what excites me about my work is FUN and LEARNING which are both supported by the management of Ørsted Malaysia office!
What are the greatest lessons I have learned at Ørsted?
The greatest lesson that I learned from Ørsted is that learning never stops… However you have to be creative in finding new things to learn and be realistic. It is proven in our business operation. Ørsted was once an O&G company now turned to Renewable Energy company. I believe that is the product of learning, learning to move on from old and black energy to green energy.

Antony

Wan Ahmad
What I do?
I am a Test Lead for Software Test Engineer department. I am the guy who helps companies to develop quality software/product. I am also the guy who bears the bad news when it comes to bugs! Any software is never 100% bug free. Imagine releasing a software without testing, good paying customers/users might face a lot of unwanted situations using the software/product which might impact its features and user friendliness. Imagine the frustration if you are amongst one of those customers/users. That’s where the Software Test Engineers step in; to reduce this kind of situations, ultimately to ensure things running smoothly.
What excites me about my work?
My work is like finding a needle in a haystack. It is also like a box of chocolate. You will never know what will pop up! It’s always full of surprises! It’s not always exciting since most of the time it involves repetitive tasks which can be quite tiring. However occasionally, I break things and that is awesome! I get to explore new territories and learn from it. The fun starts again!
As the bearer of bad news, I learn how to explain things better and make others understand easily and democratically.
Most importantly at the end of the day, to know that I contributed to make things working well is such a great satisfaction.
What are the greatest lessons I have learned at Ørsted?
The concept of “egalitarian”, all as equal! The opportunity to mingle around with just anyone from different departments/cultures/positions.
To respect each other’s views as we are part of a big organization which comes from different countries/cultures/backgrounds

Ziad
What element of the KUL office culture that you would proudly promote to your peers / friends in other Orsted locations?
It is the passion and proudness this site have. You can feel it right away when you enter the office. It is difficult to describe, you have to experience this yourself. A good example is the during the lockdown, we managed to keep our productivity and motivation high. And we had and still have a lot of fun. People are happy to work for Ørsted here in KL. Very few have left Ørsted to join other companies during the last two years. Our turn over and employee satisfaction is quite ok 😊 And of course our ambition is to improve it to even better.
What are some of the qualities that you value as a leader?
Honest, empowerment, caring & open culture where we can feel safe to speak up.
How much contribution do you think the office in Kuala Lumpur does to the Group level?
A lot. Our KPI´s shows we are doing good. But that’s only a part of the story. We are contributing with big talent pool, diversity, cost, supporting both APAC and Europe time zone, etc.. On the talent part we have access to a big talent pool, as we not only recruit in Malaysia, but in South east Asia as well. We are quite diversit when it comes to nationalities. I think we have around 18 different nationalities at KL office today.
Diversity and inclusion are the pillars of Orsted, how do you ensure that this continues to be enforced in the coming future?
As mentioned we are quite diverse on nationality and religion, which is good. But we still need to improve our diversity in other areas, as for example Gender and age. We as leaders need to put the right effort to achieve this diversity at our location. We are already working on different initiatives to make our office attractive for female candidates. And we can still do more. We are also working on initiatives to support the inclusiveness in our office. So everyone can feel they are a part of Ørsted regardless their nationality, gender, religion, age, education level etc..

Raffaello
What I do?
We do infrastructure services operation that consists of four different areas within platform services, core infrastructure, service operations and also workplace operation. We ensure that all of our IT functions in Orsted run and stay healthy throughout day to day operation.
What is important to me as a team leader at Ørsted?
We have three things that we consider the most important stuff within our department which is never to take anything personal, being passionate people and being honest with ourselves.
What strategies do I use to motivate my team and increase team productivity?
In order for us to stay motivated, I believe the most important things are to be independent, having one common goal or purpose and also to keep learning – it will refine our motivation on a daily basis.

Yiu
What I do?
I build high performing software development teams to address business needs. I source for skills and personality, help them develop over time in conjunction with addressing business needs for software solutions.
What is important to me as a team leader at Ørsted?
It is important to me to acquire and develop people that fit into our agile delivery model. We are on an ambitious digital strategy to be a leading digital utility by 2020, we’ll need to achieve high performance rapidly on our ever-changing activities to reach the strategy’s ambitions.
What strategies do I use to motivate my team and increase team productivity?
The team speak to the business during the delivery; we see how we impact the business value stream. Over time, key successes through the business must also be attributed to the teams and acknowledged; that reflects the synergies of the business and technical specialists working together in alignment.

Title: Senior Sourcing Manager
Business area: Generation & Indirect Procurement
What are your responsibilities in your role and what does a typical workweek look like for you?
As the IT Procurement Manager, I’m tasked with the acquisition of technology products and services, ensuring they meet cost-effectiveness, quality standards, and adhere to relevant policies and compliance requirements. My role involves identifying and managing vendor relationships, negotiating favourable contract terms, and collaborating closely with IT and other departments to align procurement strategies with organisational goals. I also manage complex EU tender processes, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and the best outcome for our organisation.
In a typical week, I review and prioritise my sourcing activities to address the needs. I hold meetings with stakeholders to discuss requirements and align sourcing strategies, which are followed by evaluating vendor proposals to ensure they meet our requirements and standards. I focus on delivering best commercials, managing vendor relationships, and ensuring compliance with company policies and EU tender regulations.
And of course, when working at full speed, I remind myself that coffee is my best co-worker, always keeping me on my toes! Striking a good work-life balance is key, so I make sure to carve out time for relaxation and family because we all know that a well-rested mind is the best tool for negotiation.

The company operates through cross-departmental collaboration, facilitating projects with colleagues from various locations, ensuring we all understand diverse organisational technology needs and align procurement efforts with strategic goals. The company equipped me with advanced procurement software and resources, streamlining processes and boosting efficiency, while granting me decision-making authority to negotiate contracts effectively. Katrin
Title: Lead Green Procurement Specialist
Business area: Procurement
What are your responsibilities in your role and what does a typical workweek look like for you?
My typical workweek is an untypical workweek. There’s always something new and unforeseeable, and I love that! It’s dynamic, colourful, and never boring. I engage with a lot of people – suppliers, colleagues, and industry peers. While we have concrete targets, much of my time is also spent preparing sourcing events and driving the commercial dialogue around decarbonisation.
The green transition is our top priority, but what excites me most is how we can shape it to be as sustainable and impactful as possible. As an industry, we are offtakers of key materials –often hard-to-abate materials with significant carbon footprints – but we also have the ability to drive change by putting the right incentives in place. I enjoy that it’s not a zero-sum game; rather, it’s a collaborative effort. In green procurement, we’re in a unique position to work with our suppliers and industry peers in forums such as the First Movers Coalition (FMC) Commitment by the World Economic Forum and the Climate Group. Together, we’re turning ambitious climate goals into tangible action.
How has being part of Ørsted helped you develop and grow your talent?
Working at Ørsted has allowed me to build deep expertise in hard-to-abate sectors and the key components we procure. It’s a place where I’m constantly learning – not just from my work but from the talented people around me.
What do you especially value about the Ørsted culture and team you’re part of?
Ørsted is a workplace that truly recognises and supports me, not just professionally, but as a person. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to grow in my role while also pursuing my personal goals and handling personal setbacks. For example, I recently trained for and completed a Norwegian cross-country skiing race – something that meant a lot to me. My manager backed me up, giving me the space and support to make it happen.
Even in turbulent times, at its core, Ørsted still remains Ørsome to me. That’s largely thanks to my colleagues, who make every day rewarding and meaningful.
Why is contributing to creating a world that runs entirely on green energy important to you?
I truly believe that the green transition will be one of the most decisive factors in determining how severe climate change becomes. Working for a company that’s almost entirely focused on expanding fossil fuel-free energy is both humbling and inspiring.

Title: Head of Cost Estimation
Business area: Procurement
What are your responsibilities in your role and what does a typical workweek look like for you?
In our department, we oversee the cost engineering discipline within offshore wind. This involves developing tools, methods, and methodologies for creating cost estimates from early assessment through project development. Given the multidisciplinary nature of cost engineering, my workweek includes numerous stakeholder interactions across the organisation alongside researching and innovating to optimise our processes.
How has being part of Ørsted helped you develop and grow your talent?
Since beginning as a student assistant at Ørsted, I've gone through significant development. Initially, my focus was on applying and expanding my engineering background within Ørsted and in the energy industry context. A key catalyst for my growth has been the flexibility to rotate through different areas, which has deepened my understanding of our business and broadened my perspective
What do you especially value about the Ørsted culture and team you’re part of?
In our team, we have more than eight different nationalities, working across three different locations. The cultural diversity brings so many different perspectives and ideas, not only professionally, but also socially and in the everyday life at the office.
Why is contributing to creating a world that runs entirely on green energy important to you?
There's something about renewables that just makes good sense. Contributing to renewable energy projects feels inherently right, as it involves impactful engineering that accelerates the transition to green energy, making a real-world difference.

Title: Lead Procurement Manager
Business area: Contract management, Europe&GPW
What are your responsibilities in your role and what does a typical workweek look like for you?
I work as Lead Procurement Manager, leading a team of highly skilled contract managers working on GOW03 and BKR03 projects in the construction phase. Together we’re responsible for monitoring and ensuring compliance with contracts, mitigating contract risks, managing obligations as well as negotiating variations and disputes to ensure the projects are progressing as planned and within budget.
My daily work involves organising the team to focus on activities that deliver both short-term and long-term gains. Given the dynamics of the project execution phase and construction activities, every individual week can bring its own variety of operational and tactical tasks. At the strategic level, we’re committed to continuous improvement, optimising ways of working, and implementing risk management strategies to identify potential issues early and mitigate them effectively.
How has being part of Ørsted helped you develop and grow your talent?
Through my nine-year career at Ørsted, I’ve always had endless opportunities to learn and grow professionally by enhancing both hard and soft skills. It’s not only owing to training provided, it’s also mainly due to opportunities to embed learning in daily work, due to a structured feedback culture at Ørsted, networking, and mentorship programmes.
At Ørsted, I’ve worked on seven international projects and collaborated with colleagues and suppliers representing more than 20 nationalities, which has also given me great cultural awareness and unique work experience.
What do you especially value about the Ørsted culture and team you’re part of?
I can definitely say that such values as inclusion, trust, passion, belonging, and authenticity create a positive and safe work environment in the project team where I currently work. We’re open and honest, we care about each other, accept and bring together our differences, and we’re enthusiastic about what we do to achieve common goals.
Why is contributing to creating a world that runs entirely on green energy important to you?
I’m thrilled to be part of the transformative journey in the energy sector and work in the wind power industry. It’s always with pride when I share that I work for a green energy company, which is making a tangible positive impact on our planet. It’s inspiring and rewarding to realise that my day-to-day work contributes to something beneficial for everyone – a better environment, longer and healthier lives, and a brighter future.

Vanessa
Job title: Senior HSE Specialist (HSE Project Management Office)
Date of joining Ørsted: 2014
What I do
I’ve recently joined the newly formed HSE Project Management Office at Ørsted Offshore. I was previously working in the HSE Systems and Support function where I was responsible for the HSE Management System for Offshore and acted as Lead Legal Compliance and Internal Audit Coordinator. Going forward I will be working on a variety of exciting cross-functional and cross-portfolio projects, driving change in the way we work and looking to standardise our processes across the organisation to support our goal of delivering world class QHSE.
My typical day
I’m currently part of the project team responsible for developing and implementing our new Integrated Management System which will be used across Ørsted. It’s a very interesting and ambitious project which involves combining all the existing systems into one single platform and will eventually lead to a more standardised way of working.
I spend a lot of time in meetings and workshops with the Project Team where we discuss the requirements for the system and needs of our users across the various business units and agree how we are going to set up the new tool. It’s important to ensure what we will deliver is going to add value and suit the needs of the organisation so, there is a lot of dialogue and communication with our stakeholders across the various departments. We try to get as much feedback as we can from the business as we make decisions.
When I’m not in the meetings and workshops, I spend my time maintaining our existing HSE Management System and getting the content ready to migrate to the new system. It’s a busy time right now but it will be worth it once we successfully launch our new Integrated Management System.
My career path
I’ve been working as an HSE Professional in the wind industry for almost 8 years now. However, this wasn’t a career path that I had planned or actively pursued. I got into the role and the industry by accident after I left a career in banking. I’d decided I wasn’t happy in what I was doing and needed to change direction, so I took some time out to reflect and found a temporary position as a site assistant on a local windfarm. I immediately loved the role and worked hard, taking an interest in the industry and all aspects of running a wind farm. My enthusiasm was noticed by the HSE Manager on the site, who saw potential in me and asked me if I would consider a career in Health and Safety. I said yes and was lucky enough to be taken on full-time as HSE assistant, with the company supporting my professional studies. Once I was qualified, I moved into the role of Site HSE Manager at Ørsted and I’ve progressed internally from there.
The best thing about my job
I love the variety of the tasks I get involved in and the opportunity to work with different people. The organisation and industry are changing constantly. There is always focus on improving how we do things which leads to exciting new projects to work on. I can honestly say, I am never bored and always look forward to the next challenge.
The top tips I would give to someone aspiring to work in a similar position
It’s important to find a career and a role that you’re passionate about, which suits your personality and allows you to be yourself and make best use of your skills.
If you’re interested in HSE, explore the different industries and types of jobs available and decide what you would like to do. As well as undertaking your professional qualifications (such as NEBOSH), consider other courses which will increase your knowledge and make you stand out – auditing and incident investigation are universally transferrable skills. Also, project management skills are always in demand.
Whatever you decide you want to do, make sure you give it your all - be fully committed, be enthusiastic and always be open to change and eager to explore new ideas. It’s this attitude and approach that will get you noticed and help you progress—skills and techniques can be learnt and honed but passion cannot be bought or taught.
